Fundamental movement skills - Throwing and catching cues

The characteristics of throwing and catching are listed below:

Throwing

  • stand shoulder facing target, feet shoulder width apart or slightly wider
  • throwing arm is swung far back in preparation for forward swinging action
  • ensure throwing arm has elbow held high
  • opposite arm is raised for balance/direction and generating rotation
  • there is a definite turning of the body through legs, hips and shoulders weight transfers from back foot to front foot, with a step with the opposite foot to the throwing arm
  • hips rotate in the motion of releasing the ball
  • squash the bug with your rear foot
Catching/receiving
  • body positioned directly in path of the ball
  • eyes follow the flight path of the ball into the hands
  • arms ‘give’ on contact to absorb the force of the ball
  • hands and fingers spread to receive the ball, with thumbs in opposition to each other
